How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends signals to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can trigger spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of a chain stretch or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain. However, the code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test since there are several connector pins, and each has its own functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is operational, it should be reading approximately 1000 ohms. Look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at maximum speed, i noticed a huge reduction in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each hole in the injector and when i start the engine with no sparks, the ones with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one stays closed. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got 0ohm. So i assume the problem is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it works fine when the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when unplugged, still shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, i believe that i've completely ruled out all other possibilities. However, i'm afraid that i might have missed something. Let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is identical to the G4 and both function in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or from a parts store.
